I used to live in cities with small yards or none at all. I grew toamotes in pots. The smaller varieties do better in pots. They require frequent watering. The five gallon buckets should work fine. You can grow squash and cucumbers in those buckets too. Lettuce can be grown in boxes as shallow as 10 inches as long as you keep it watered. Herbs are a worthwhile kitchen crop, because food you cook with them taste so much better, than the storebought stuff.

BBH, I am going to eat him, but only because I'm incapable of wasting food, especially meat. I get horrible guilt and it bothers me for days.
So I'm boiling the heck out of him, and I'll make some Matzo ball soup tomorrow :drool

Cool. I may end up with a tough bird that I have to eat and I was just wondering how to prepare it so it won't end up tough in the long run. (His bones will make a tasty broth too.)

Welcome to you!!! I have the same falling-asleep issue when I eat too many carbs at once. In fact, I'll be sleepy soon, 'cause we had pancakes for dinner! Good thing we'll be watching a movie together this evening.

As far as kombucha, it tastes like apple cider, with a bit of a kick. If you culture it too long, it begins to taste like apple cider vinegar. It has many, many health benefits. Personally, I have experienced energy, a cleaner complexion, gray hairs turning brow again (really, truly, and I didn't believe that claim!), much less craving for sugar and appetite suppressant. I think it helps us avoid the bugs that always travel through church, too, but that has lots of factors.

Here's a great website to research it: http://www.kombu.de/english.htm

I have an entry about growing a scoby on my recipe blog: http://feedingthecrew.blogspot.com/2010/01/how-to-brew-kombucha-without-scoby.html

I look forward to hearing how good you do avoiding carbs, so I can be inspired, too!

Hannalee, thanks for the links :)
If it's sort of like AVC, I'd probably like it. I do an AVC beverage with Stevia that's...well it's not great, but it makes me feel fantastic!
*goes to read about kombucha*

:frow I just caught up with your journal....wow, thanks for the kind words....it is strange to see that my rantings have actually inspired someone....and a smarty-pants someone, to boot! Hope you enjoy the crackers and the fermenting adventures....never a dull moment when you start fermenting!

You can make a lot of yummy things to drink with stevia. I was a diet Coke-a-holic for many years, and thought I was doing a good thing by switching to splenda....yikes.

I buy the biggest bottle I can find of the liquid stevia drops (not glycerate, watch out for that one) and drink a lot of it. Here are some ideas...

Quick ice tea: Make a mug of tea with two tea bags. Add a squirt of stevia and a squeeze of fresh lemon. Pour over a large glass of ice cubes and enjoy!

Hot chocolate: Add a small amount of boiling water to a mug, maybe 1/2-1/3 cup. Add unsweetened baking chocolate or a heaping spoonful of Hershey's (or other brand) of baking cocoa and stir-stir-stir and then stir some more. Add a tiny bit of salt, stevia to taste (lots....chocolate is bitter and stevia doesn't balance it easily....use a bit of sweet milk chocolate too, if needed) and a splash of vanilla extract, then fill the mug with steamed milk...or as I have learned to love, warm milk fresh from the goat.

Chai tea: Simmer two quarts of water for thirty minutes with a 4" piece of cinnamon bark, 10 or more whole allspice seeds, half a nutmeg, a few cardamom pods if you have them, and a chunk of grated or minced fresh ginger root. Remove from heat and let stand, covered, several hours or overnight. Strain into bottles and refrigerate. Use this concentrate to flavor tea....about 1/4 chai to 3/4 water, and maybe add a black tea bag for a mug or 2-3 tea bags for a pot of tea. This is excellent hot or iced.

Or use 1 part chai, 1 part kombucha, stevia, and 2-3 parts water for a very refreshing cold drink.

Lemonade or limeade: Juice of one lime or half a lemon, or a combination, with lots of stevia and ice water. Throw in a shot of vodka if desired (if you imbibe, that is....)

In summer, you can make your own fruit infused water with a quick squeeze of any citrus or a few crushed berries, a bit of stevia, and lots of water. The idea is a lightly flavored water to chug-a-lug.

Wow, you have been busy. The pulled pork salad sounds wonderful. I love making a mixed green salad and topping it with everything in the fridge.

Glad to hear you weren't injured in the lard rendering event.

Have a great day.
