We lived in Oklahoma for 11 years....I hear ya there about the heat. UGH!

Oh we haven't had much rain at all.... nothing measurable since march 9. We are 16 inches below normal rainfall - the grass crunches as we walk. I run a sprinkler for 2 hours every other day at least and my corn is still drying up.kcsunshine said:

AL, you need to get some soaker hoses. That at least puts the water at the roots where it's needed. A sprinkler just lets the water evaporate before it hits the ground. We don't have a water source for our back garden so hubby puts a big cattle waterer full of water on the back of his dump truck - he's put a faucet on the side at the bottom - and takes it back there with a hose and waters that way. Hurray for gravity!

Hen - enjoy it now... we are on our way to 100* tomorrow (heat index).
today we are scampering to get as much done as we can. and
ITS THE BIG MAN'S BIRTHDAY!!
so yay! i made him another strawberry cheesecake pie. tonite we'll have the festive bday dinner with his mom. last year she reminded us that this day... this day of days... this day of all days was special because......
....it was the anniversary of the death of her 150 year old poodle.
us: (blink blink)
my poor husband. the scene, us at a fun restaurant, party hats, the servers just walked up to sing happy birthday, etc....
she, sulking: this was the day...
me, cheerfully: yeah and um... its HIS (*points*) birthday!
she: ...and then the dog died. this is the worst day ever.
me, to waitress: mas tequila!
she: the saddest. day. ever.
me: make it a double!
she: luckily some people came by and helped...
me: that was US!
she: whatever.
anyway. i'm loading up on pie and heading out. yesterday we got a lot done. we're beating our way thru the woods so we can run the fencing for the new pig lot. its like cutting thru the jungle. with poison ivy and no monkeys.
but - the woods are really lovely once you get the bramble beat back. them pigs are gonna be in hog heaven for sure.
and
when they are done there will be a huge cleared spot.
in other news. Kai still thinks that planting beans is The Most Boring Thing EVER. and she thinks that this whole global warming thing sucks and its never been so hot in her WHOLE life. (which is of course hilarious b/c she's only ever known cold weather - her bday is in Oct).
she also said that she read on the interweb that its someone named "Al Gore's" fault. she wants her money back and has been out there doing the "snow dance" trying to get some frosty flakes to fall from the sky. we dont have the heart to tell her that its just getting started.
and
we are worried our meats are gonna get cooked in the heat. if they can make it thru wed they'll be ok and we can dress them next week but man. its gonna be a hotsy-totsy for sure.

My meaties finally learned how to seek out the shady spot under the bushes. Maybe they need a pool to lounge in today.They are so good at lounging. Lounging is an odd word to write.

pretty soon, Java, them meats are gonna be floating in the pool on a dino-raft with a tropical drink in their hands! ha!
WZ - we take all the dogs for a swim down in the pond. Kai is hilarious. she chases the ducks - which, of course, can swim much better than she can. her little curly tail sticks up like periscope and she swims like mad.
the only problem is that she likes to make decisions for herself. like, "i'm gonna go swimming alone" or "hey i'm gonna just swim around in circles out in the middle of the pond until ....oh no.. i'm tired.. momma!!!"
so far we've been able to use Ti as a way to get her back in. we just throw a stick toward her, he swims out and she follows him in. believe me it will be a sad day for everyone if i have to get in the pond water to fish her out!
but then again, maybe OD will get his just revenge on that pup for all the times she chases him around. zoikes!

I spent quite a bit of time trying to "teach" my poodle to swim. Poodles were originally bred as water retrievers! Sheesh! One day we were playing his favorite game of "froggie" (tossing pebbles in a farm pond so he could bark at the splash and try to catch the splash in his mouth....as long as he didn't have to get more than his fingers wet! Yes, he has fingers....) when he got super excited at a series of three pebbles and forgot that he melts when wet and he jumped in and began swimming. That was it. He was hooked. Now I have to call him out of the water periodically to get him to rest. I can tell because he likes to bark when he swims and his bark takes on a different pitch when he needs to come out.
Aren't farm ponds great? I couldn't survive with a young dog in the hot weather if there was no way to safely drain that energy! Especially a heavy coated dog.
