Hi - first post on here. Came over from Backyard Chickens site. I live in Western NC now - until closer to retirement in a few years. Have 5 acres in upstate SC I am setting up as a small homestead - bit by bit. Have a 40 x 60 foot 5 stall barn with large hayloft in place. It includes two bedrooms and baths. Have a well that's at least 1000 ft deep and has worked for 40 years. Have an abandoned pool that now is home to 4 mallards in a floating duckhouse. Have electricity and septic but hope to transition to composting toilets. Giving some thought to strawbale house or may go with another option to include solar panels, etc. Getting information from John Seymour's "Self Sufficient Life and How to Live it" and planning slowly and carefully so I can get by on retirement income and debt free when the time comes.
Hope to start with chickens and pigs. I'll keep the ducks and maybe get one cow.
