FEM, that is for climbing through the wall :) It's like a "hiker's" gate, that keeps animals in/out, but allows hikers access or exit, whichever is needed. Some stone walls have steps build in for climbing over too. I'll try to remember to take a pic next time I see one.
Now that you explained it - it makes perfect sense. So cool!

oh man, you're killing me with these shots! what a daily walk. wow.
you're reminding me of a time in my life that i road in a bus along the pacific coast highway in southern california. there was a stretch that ran right along the beach. and riding home in the evening the only thing to see out the window of the bus was the sand, the shore with little lapping waves, the great blue, green on the pacific ocean and the sun setting and the evening sky.
and i remember looking at this man sitting across the aisle and he was fast asleep. his hands were loose in his lap, his shoulders were hunched forward, his chin was tucked into his chest and he was drooling onto his tie!
and i remember thinking, how can anybody sleep through this?! i wanted to shout: 'just look out there!' but the sun was setting and i didn't want to be distracted any more.
wow, thanks for that memory... :)

Ancient grave in what I assume was the church past. The faces of it's occupants on the lid.

Another ancient grave

An abandoned and forgotten cemetery just outside the walls. It took me a second to realise the stones scattered around and under the trees were grave markers

This may be Sumi's thread but Chic Rustler I'm glad I'm not down there to deal with the Texas heat and I've already got WAAAAAY to many family members down there so Texas isn't the place for me. I'm SOOOOOOO glad to be in NY and in the country away from chaos and drama.

Come visit you all… This castle gets rented out for holidays, weekends etc. Sleeps 14 or 16 people, e1,000 per night in peak season, but a better rate "off peak" if you take it for a week ;) Who's coming?

We went to Glendalaugh in Co Wicklow yesterday. Gorgeous place, amazing old cemetery, ancient buildings, lakes, forrest and a curious little deer that came out of the forrest to say hello :love I took many pics, some on the way there, lots there, some on the way back. Here are just some…
