What did you do in your orchard today?

Curious about Carmine Jewel, does it sucker? Would it make a nice hedge row eventually?

It's been there well over ten years and never has grown any suckers.

It has one trunk and a globe top and will reach about 6' tall. Not a good candidate for a hedge in my opinion.

Nanking cherries make an excellent edible hedge. The bad thing with the Nankings is the size of the cherry is only slightly larger than the pit and they are greatly desired by robins. On the plus side they are almost sweet and a pleasure to grab a handful to eat as you pass by.

They grow in a bush form and the seeds sprout easily. My Nanking Cherry hedge is nearing 40 years and they are about 7' tall.

@R2elk ... Nice crop there. Wish we were close, I'd sure buy some of them. First house we ever bought had a nice cherry tree in the front yard. Tart pie type...soooo good! That's what I missed most when we moved

The wind blew one of our apple trees over - its was a long twig three years ago when we bought it from Stark. Now its about 5' tall and the vineyard stretchy tape broke, which was anchoring it to a flimsy stake. Luckily it didn't break so we propped it up and used a t-post and more of the stretchy tape in two places.

Our fruit trees don't thrive here. Not enough watering and no, they are not on any drip line (or micro irrigation as they say in walnut and almond orchards).

First leaf calloused grafts from late winter early spring this year. As you can see I'm far from being a professional. I strive for a high percentage of takers vs esthetics. But by the end of second leaf, these grafts will be hardly noticeable.
