I direct seed squash. Started plants don't give any benefit here. They take to long to get over the transplant shock. The seeds will catch up and pass them if put in the ground at the same time. Hasn't mattered if it's the ground or raised bed. Squash does very well here.

Direct seeding works well for MOST. Getting results faster &/or shorter grow season is really what fires up the started plants. Years back you didn't have acres of starts to select from! If you didn't "hoe & sow" you didn't grow. :old

Some seeds will sprout in colder temps if the seed has been subjected to that cold soil, be healthier than a start and grow just fine...compared to our babied starts. So I look to sunshine outside with a little cover for frost -- a cold frame works well.

I will start a few things this years simply because I want the produce sooner than later. You know, for some of the "white collar" gardeners it's all about beating your neighbor to the first red tomato!

My tomatoes may not be first but there's plenty of them :) where I live I have to start tomatoes & peppers indoors i'll probably get the started next week.

Seed catalogs are bad enough, but today I got this. I guess I might be planting some of these seeds.

Look at those eyelashes!!!! You need some of those.
Heck, I've already got enough to butcher, stop the crow.

Last summer I mentioned that I had one who was really aggressive -- pretty boy, but! -- and was going to put him in a stew pot. Before long, my GrD & DD "want him". Hmmm, he's got a great coop...could hold about 20 hens!....outside run, etc. So, I find it was only to prevent the pot. Now, I can't mention how many are here & their fate. :idunno :he Yep, they buy and eat chicken. Probably wouldn't eat if I had raised etc. Sheesh!

Next pot of chick-n-dmplgs will be a surpise.

This milder weather we're getting at the moment is drawing me out to the future garden and thinking about what I need to do still. Like get the final cleaning done, plan out the vegetable beds, chicken area, lawn… plant my poor roses.

My roses got planted out finally! :) And DS found something cool in the backyard just now, part of a stone pipe. I wonder how old this is?

I am going to ask an Irish friend of mine if there is anyone or anywhere local that may have a look at it and tell us about it. If it's really old, or otherwise special, I may give it to a museum, otherwise I'll keep it.
