idk. never used them before. but I have 25 jars of them so I better figure it out. lol!

I'm thinking mixing them with potatoes and mashing, stews, stuff like that

to me they are like a rather wimpy cabbage flavor so they go with about anything as filler. i like them best when pan fried to give them a bit of brown on the edges.

Do you grow the little short season turnips (usually roots are white with a purple top) or the large yellow rhutabagas? I've never eaten the little ones.

I grow purple top white globes

same here, i tried rutabagas one time and they just didn't taste that great (another name sometimes used for them is swedes). i used to get them up north in the pastys and liked them in there. probably because that was just bits of them and not a whole bowl at a time. :) it was a bit of a surprise to me that i didn't like them as i generally like almost all the veggies i try. i ended up turning the whole row under for worm food. i can eat a whole bowl of fried turnips without a problem.

it is funny you call them a short season crop as here they can be put in early in the spring and some left to go will be the size of a basketball by late summer.

I love them, But, they are best enjoyed in small servings. A little bit goes a long way. They are jet propulsion fuel. But, one tried and true remedy for that is to mix a bit of mashed potato into them. That cuts the "afterburn".

Edit function not working today. Added to Rhutabaga: They used to serve R. and carrot sticks as part of the school lunch program. I always found the R sticks to be sweeter than the C sticks.
