Hen23's Journal~Goodbye

I hate traffic.

I know, me too! Where we are traffic is having to wait for the two mama turkey hens to get all their poults across the street safely... or waiting to make sure there isn't a second fawn after a doe and fawn trot across the road in front of you. Or waiting for the farm tractor to find a safe spot to pull over a bit so you can pass!

Not not not looking forward to tomorrow! We will be spending the hottest part of the day under a tent at a memorial concert for our friend Jim. Temps expected to break records. Sigh. I'm having a hard time not being a big baby about it. DS's band plays first at noon, then I'm hoping he'll be able to pack up and we can leave soon after. I really hope none of the other drummers plan on using his drums when he's done like they sometimes do for these events. Since we leave Sunday for our camping trip, he needs to take the drums with him so we'd have to stick around until he can pack them up. We could bring DS with us but not with that heat! He can stay at my parents and we'll pick him up after. Not sure what the plan is for the rest of the day other than packing but I'm really hoping that DH comes up with a dinner plan because I do not feel like I should cook my own birthday dinner on a day that is in the high 90s if not hotter.

I agree! It's still around 90* here, and it's almost 11:00!

That's the kind of traffic I like, too. There have been a few times I've had to park my truck and chase a bunch of geese and/or ducks off the road when they've deserted one of the lakes. It doesn't do any good to honk your horn at them, they just honk back, and continue to meander all over the road. The only way to deal w/them is to get out and chase them. :/

Hot again. It's supposed to break some but not as much as I'd hoped. We are almost done packing. We'll finish after church, do a last minute check on the animals then head to the beach for thee days of camping. I've got lots of letterbox and geocache clues with me. They're forecasting scattered thunderstorms all week but it shouldn't be a washout.
Yesterday was beastly. We spent hours under a tent baking and sweating for this memorial concert that was put on for our friend who passed away on Mother's Day. A lot of people didn't show up because of the heat. And most of us didn't stick around. I was feeling nauseous by the time we left and we still had a lot of packing to do. DH took us out to dinner for my birthday so at least I didn't have to cook and clean up! Wasn't much of a birthday though... nice that we were all together but that's about it. Our trip will be more of a celebration. We're bringing the big lobster pot and will visit the fish market one day while we're down there!
Just need to pack the last minute stuff and head to church. I'll pack the food when we get back. Then we're off. Be back Wednesday. Have a great week everyone!!

Hehe, well lobsters got a little interesting! We were at Rocky Neck State Park in East Lyme. We set up Sunday and had an easy dinner. Monday it was chilly and gray all morning. We hiked and geocached and letterboxed then hung out at the beach. It was starting to rain so I made a quick dinner at camp. We planned on doing the lobsters last night but a huge thunderstorm came through so we went out and had lobsters instead. Oh well!
We are home, dirty and tired, but all in a good way. More later. Need to unpack.

Hi Hen! Just stopping in really quickly. TONS going on at work - good stuff - so I'll be on pretty sparsly for a while, but I wanted to tell you to have a great vacation! We're going to camp at Hopeville the last full week of August. We like it there because it's so close to home that we don't have to find a pet sitter and can run home, do the chores and be back within an hour.

That's just about perfect~! My mom was able to handle things for us here. No milking to be done : (
We're happy to be home AND have power. My parents' is still out! Bad storms last night. Lots of big trees down, but here at our house, aside from some flopping tomatoes, no sign of anything

Wow, just watched the local CBS news. They covered Willimantic, which is part of the town I live in, kind of sort of, difficult to explain. ANYWAY, there was lots of storm damage in the "city" and many trees down. We got really lucky here and have nothing! My parents had no power for 24 hours and they're further from town than we are. Weird!
So camping was fun. Three nights seems to be a good get away for us. DS made some friends and was able to ride his bike around the campground independently without me freaking out too much. We rode our bikes to the beach several times each day and on Monday hiked through the woods looking for letterboxes and geocaches. There are literally dozens hidden there, but the guys would have fits if I tried to do too many. We found a really fun geocache in a tree out on the huge boulders near the beach, and a couple of letterboxes off in the woods. We couldn't find a few and had to report our failures because it may mean they've disappeared. We found another cache just outside the state park on our way home.
We stopped at Borders in Waterford since they are having their huge going out of business sale, but unfortunately 10% off isn't enough to justify much when there's no money coming in this summer. DH found some woodworking magazines for school. They were 40% off and he gets reimbursed for them!
Of course all the camping equipment is wet from the rain so we have to set the tent up to dry out. It didn't leak at all which is always a joy. I hate getting wet!!
Unfortunately I have low tolerance for loud people at campgrounds. I mean, it just isn't necessary to use your outside voice all the time, just because you're outside!!! The two families in the loop behind us did just that. they would talk across their sites at the top of their voices all morning and evening. I try to ignore but honestly, it really drives me nuts. And then after they got their kids to bed (the kids were loud too, and the youngest cried constantly, he was maybe 3-and that I was able to ignore, because he's a kid after all......) and well after 10:00 quiet hours the fathers were still sitting around the fire talking and laughing at full volume. The first night we were there it became evident that they had been cutting through our site to get to the bath house in our area because it was closer than the one in theirs. They came crashing through at about 11:00, kids in tow, and whining, and had the nerve to complain that our tent was in their way. That got a remark through the tent walls from me that we were trying to sleep and they were trespassing in our site. They didn't do it again but as soon as we had the car loaded and pulled out their kids were riding their bikes through our site. Gotta love having the world revolve around you, huh? I don't know if it's just me, because every camping trip I seem to get annoyed by stuff like this... I really do like camping, just not this part of it. DH and I camped in Baxter State Park in Maine in 1991, much more primitive, and I don't necessarily like that better. But it seems if you camp where other families are, there are annoying families. These people honestly seemed to have no clue that anyone else was in the park other than them! Until our tent was in their way that is....
that said, we're hoping to go back in the fall for a weekend..

Camping.... Ahhh I need a good long trip. When we are out in the desert things get tricky. We camp in wagon train circles in our traiers with a variety of friends... and their friends. Sometimes the group is just right. Other times there are people I could murder.
