While I of course didn't purposefully intend to offend anybody, nor would I ever actually employ nor condone actually doing so, I do apologize for being a bit crude in my attempt at levity.
fair weather chicken - Watched it, at your recommendation. I enjoyed it a lot and agree with your assessment. It definitely left me with more of a determined resolve rather than inducing a sense of dread. Thanks!
rhoda_bruce - I also watched this after your recommendation. Overall, I really...
Wow! The proof is self-evident!
As for the grinding, his method was primitive. He fold-up some heavy canvas and pretty much make a taco and take a sledge hammer to it. To save some wear on his canvas he'd slip old streetsigns and other sheet metal scraps. He'd then shift out the powder. In a...
I grew up in Grants, NM, formerly The Carrot Capitol of the US (now it's The Uranium Capitol... *shudder*).
The 'secret' was our mostly sandy and volcanic natural soil mixed with a heavy compost (appr. 1/3 semi-acidic sand mixed with 2/3 compost and cattle manure blend). A hippie friend of mine...
As a little side note, I couldn't help but share the safety page of Estwing's site:

I have a poor hammer that meets every one of their 'throw-away' marks that I use all the time! It's the one hammer not in my truck or handtool bag. it's the 'floater...
I totally could have used one of these at work these past couple of days. I've been hanging louan panels in a kitchen ceiling (bosses idea, not mine) with 1 1/2" panel nails (ran out of the 1" doing trim). My arm was about to fall off it seemed...
With a choked up grip and that short heavy head...
Personally, I'm setting a 5acre minimum when I start the shopping process. I doubt I could really make effective use of more than 10.
I'd say:
1/2 to 1 full acre for my home and various outbuildings along with herb/kitchen gardens squeezed inbetween
Another 1/2 acre for Animal housing and feed...
I love documentary film.
Especially on topics such as survival, earth stewardship, climate change, etc.
My all-time favorite is Dick Proenneke's Alone in The Wilderness. That man was UH-MAZE-ING! This short film was the catalyst that set me on the road I now endeavor to walk.
Other favorites...
Some of my fondest memories of my dad come from times I would go out with him cutting wood. As he would cut it, I'd load the section into the truck, delighting in the sap-sticky hands and the smell of fresh cut pinon, oak and spruce.
Then once we had what he thought was enough, we'd get busy...
Thanks for the helpful info sunsaver! I definitely appreciate your insight.
As far as the heater goes, it would just be for brief usage periods, enough to take off the morning chill as the coffee brews until I can get a nice wood stove. I might run it off a small generator though and use the...
I'm considering buying an inverter when tax return time comes, but I'm admitting upfront a shortage of knowledge of the subject.
Ideally, I'd want something that could run a couple of 75watt bulbs, a mini-fridge, a 1500-2500 watt coil heater and a few outlet for charging phones/radio/low draw...
Barring the idea of Iran losing it's mind (admittedly possible but not probable) or a major hit the national grain crop futures market, I don't think there's any real substantial economic threat looming on the horizon that would result in an 'epic' financial implosion. There may be some nasty...
This is the first I had ever heard of it. Read through the wiki and the main website and it's peaked my interest a bit. I'll have to look into it a bit more and see if there is even a local chapter around me.
Thanks for educational prodding. :D
Might be more cost efficient to make your own.
Here's a site with good deals on bulk canvas:

All the grommets, cordage, poles and other hardware could be purchased at the building box store nearest you.
You should be fine with the 1-1/4" coils since you can always dial down the force of the piston. If you need further reassurance, you could always do a test run on some scrapwood while you're still on the ground. :D
