My wife has developed a relationship with Amish lady well actually 2 Amish ladies that live right next door to each other. They have 12 chickens between the two families and are always short on eggs. So they bake my wife a loaf of bread and my wife gives them 3 dozen eggs. Same arragement holds true for Amish butter a block of butter for 3 dozen eggs.

This is like the perfect arrangement... I love the fresh baked bread, and butter both are delicious. I can tell the bread was baked in a wood stove because it has just a hint of smokey flavor. The bread is so good warmed up in the toaster and spread with Amish butter and local honey.

I'm thinking about giving them a couple of burbon red turkeys. I couldn't think of anyone better to give turkey chicks too. What a nice group of folks the Amish are. I love it when they pull up to my house in their horse and buggy, it's a really cool thing. I need to find time to spend more time with them, they can teach me so much that I would really like to learn.

Wife was telling me stories about picking pears with her friend (name withhrld out of respect). They speak pennsylvania dutch which is an old form of German and not modern German but has evolved since Amish moved to the United States long ago. Of course the older children also know & learn English but the younger children only understand and can speak pennsylva dutch. My wife said I had a whole row of Amish kids in the back seat of the pickup truck because it was raining when they went to go pickup the kids from my wife's friends sister's house and my wife didn't want the kids walking home about 1/2 mile in the rain. Maybe I'll get permission to take pictures and share with you all one of these days.

It's kind of nice to be able to make friends with such a difference culture and lifestyle as our own. It's truly a great learning opportunity for me and my wife.

I got a call first thing this morning, .50 chicks at rural king. I picked up my amish friend and his little boy. Left rural king with over 100 chickens, 30 or so were stinky CCX couch potato chickens. 2 bags of pine chips and 5 bags of feed. This absolutely made my day. I really love his little boy (5), he's always smiling and just now starting to learn English.

No pictures sorry... I try my best to adhere to their beliefs. I guess they are not going to move to soon :)

He told me that he'll use a kerosene heater with a piece of metal over the top to distribute heat to keep the chicks warm. But we carried the boxes into the.kitchen and set them near the oven until he gets them set up in the coop.

Got two pies a lemon cream and coconut cream plus a pint of cream for whipping.

My wife went and picked up her Amish Friend to come pick in the garden since there's isn't really doning so well. She brought 1 of her 5 childern. A perfect little 2 year old gentleman. He is very bashful but I was able to gain a little trust from him with his mom's help. He only talks pennsylvania dutch (German) but lucky for me I know just enough German to kind of understand what he was saying to me. I picked a small sunflower that was ready and picked a few seeds off and gave him a few seeds I eat some then he eat some and said thank you in German. He then seen the chickens and asked me in German if he could see chickens. So I showed him the turkeys and chickens. The little gentleman was so polite and asked him which chicken he liked, he pointed to a young buff orpengton hen so I gabbed it and put it a dog carrier and the hen is on its way back home with him now. I really thought that little gentleman was pretty cool and so polite for two years old I was amazed.
Anyways he knew chickens lay eggs and he said to me chicken lay egg for me to eat? Yes I said and this is your chicken now said and he said thank you.

The little guy also loved playing in the sand box and his mom asked if I would build one for them (they have 5 young childern) I said yes if you have a few cedar trees. She then offered to pay me for the sand box but I couldn't take money from them because they are friends.

Out of respect I purposely did not include any names.

My Wife's Amish friend asked my wife what kind of pie is my favorite. Well cherry of course. Then after a few days later my wife comes walking in with, you guess it, a cherry pie. It sat on the counter for 2 days because it was so pretty to look at. But I couldn't take it anymore... I had to cut it. Delicious... With just a hint of smokey flavor, since it was cooked in a wood stove / oven.

CC, I'm 53 now and I had never tried pecan pie until last year...and found it to be kind of sweet but the pecans cut the sweetness. I found I loved it and wondered why I had never tried it all these years of church socials and family reunions.

I'd rather have it over apple pie....unless the apple pie is like my mama used to make and with a huge scoop of vanilla ice cream. :D

I'm sitting here on the front porch listening to the crickets and treefrogs croaking, enjoying a nice cold glass of super light bodied homemade cranberry wine. I'm wondering to myself, what's all the strife in the united states about anyways. I can bet you dollars to doughnuts, a nice warm slice of Amish made pecan pie and a glass of cold cranberry wine enjoyed on my front porch on a cool summer evening, could solve a lot of the world's problems :) heck my wife even has 10 seats for people to come sit and enjoy. But what a awesome way to unwind, after a stressful day of working for the man.

My wife went to go see her Amish friend and she sent 6 of these home for me :)
I don't know what it's called but it "was" delicious. It was like some kind of fist sized slightly smokey chocolate cake with chocolate goats milk cream filling :drool. Can't say I every had one before until now. I guess I missed out all my life.
