This a a great thread, crealbilly. Very nice to see this work.

I play guitar, and have fooled around with bass but never owned one. I'm amazed you can build 8-string basses with such a graceful, narrow neck. Must be some very reliable reinforcing rod in there!

I've got a good friend who's a luthier — has mainly built mandolins, but works on acoustic guitars a lot as well as other fretted stringed instruments. It's fine, precise, delicate work.

Yes it is very detailed... Some measurements are very precise we're talking +/- thousands of an inch.

I usually use just one of the very best single two-way truss rods. But for this build I went with two of the very best two-way truss rods.

I know $52.00 plus shipping and handling just in truss rods alone... But it proved to be the right choice to make the neck extremely playable.

Also I wanted to add... All of my fretted basses are fretted with classical guitar fretwire and not bass fretwire.

Ken really liked Steve Howe. He didn't care too much for the guitarist above.

About 40 or so hours from rough cut lumber to putting a finish on it. Probably about another 5 hours polishing, installing the pups, soldering the wiring, stringing, setup, tweaking, testing and polishing.

Hmmmm...somebody likes Northern Tools? I like the hat.

Very nice work. How long did it take you to get to the drying step?

I had this faster tempo bluesy / rock song stuck in my head today. So I wrote some lyrics to what was in my head. See if your husband can use it.

<verse 1>
Now you say that you're leavin'
Well it can't be too soon
You spend all of my money
And knocked my guitar out of tune.

<verse 2>
Well you say you're sick and tired
Tired of having me around
You call me cheatin' liar
And you drove my car into the ground.

<chorus>
I'll be glad when you're gone
Yes, I'll be glad when you're gone
And when you finally walk out that door
Darlin', please don't come back no more

<verse 3>
Now I wish I'd never known you
You know I wish we'd never met
When I was drunk you gave me whiskey
When I was ill you called the vet.

<verse 4>
Well you say that it's over
And you think you'll bring me down
If you come back here lookin' for me
You'll find me out there on the town.

<chorus>
And I'll be glad when you're gone
Yes I'll be glad when you're gone
When you finally walk out that door
Darlin', please don't come back no more

If your husband reads sheet - I could send that to you as well - I'm almost done with it.

Ken says you are WAY over his head. :) He isn't a professional. He just likes to strum and sing. But having said that, he loves what you are getting ready to do. He is a mechanical engineer and loves working with his hands.
