the first year is important for grape vines you intend to keep for a long time. you don't want a trunk that is slanted or looped or sagging (you want water to run right down the main stem) - otherwise it encourages disease or even splitting.

after the first year when you work with the plant you may want to shape it to fill a given space but the more important thing to consider is how much first year wood (how many nodes) you need to leave for the next year's fruiting and also taking into consideration the variety and how old the plant is. you probably won't hit a lot of production until after the third season when starting out with a new vine.

Crazy how much they are supposed to grow between year 1 and 2. My grapes look exactly like yr 1, a twig with buds. Lol

conditions vary, soils vary, sunlight varies, if you have buds then you're doing ok. hopefully they will put on more growth this season. they may try to flower but it is better to just snip off any flower buds the first year so it doesn't waste any energy on trying to fruit.

i should have also said that the faster you can pinch or snip them off when they appear the better too.

Well... The ty ty grapes are starting to shot up vines. I told my wife it's gonna be so hard to cut all those vines and leave just one. She said yeah I know with a frown on her face. Then she said can you propagate them? I was surprised that she said the word propagate, it turned on a lightbulb 💡

So I got to studying... Grape greenwood cuttings seem pretty easy to root. I'm gonna give it a try. If they take I'll feel better than just letting them wither to die on the ground. But then again, if they take, I'll have so many grape vines I won't know what I'll do with them all. I guess I could pot the ones that take and babysit them till they go dormant. Then try and sell them as 1 year plants next spring.

I really need a green house or something all these plants we got started and attempts at making more plants, is starting to get out of hand quickly...

This is good to know! One if my cuttings has about 7 new green shoots coming!

I as well need a greenhouse.

I'd try a plastic bag with grow medium and moisture. Tie bag near top and wait for roots. 🤔 never tried or researched. Just sounds reasonable. Works for figs. 😁

that sounds like air layering and yes it can work when the vine is actively growing but with the trimmings happening soon that's not the case. during the growing season one way with certain varieties to get a new vine started is to just let a vine hit the ground cover it with a bit of dirt over some nodes and pin it down a bit with a stick or small rock, give it some time and it will usually root.

did she start the plant from a cutting herself? i ask because sometimes they can be grafted onto other rootstock. i'm guessing that it may not really matter but it can sometimes be worth it spending some $ on an known quality grape vine instead of just guessing because you're going to be putting work into growing and pruning them. if instead you're willing to take the risk you can give it a shot and consider it a learning experience. :)

i think for your zone a Concord vine should survive.
She did not plant cuttings, she bought vines from a nursery.

Give it a try... There's nothing to gain if you don't give it a try.

I have a little encouragement for you. A neighbor up the road where we used to live had both white and purple concord grave vines that he started the same way you are. We picked the vines for 3 years and my wife canned grape juice with the whole grapes, water and a little sugar. Which we shared with him and his wife. I really miss that grape juice, so delicious. Welches had nothing on her. She also made grape jelly from the concord grapes which was delicious and we shared the jelly also. How's that for a little encouragement? OK?
