I'm guessing a time line would be more like 6 weeks or so? I'll get 'em separated this weekend and then I'll need to wait a month or so to let the alien sperm dissipate, lol. Then collect for about a week. Then ship.

I really like the Orpingtons...they are nice calm birds and the roosters get good sized and make a pretty decent carcass...just slow growing like most heritage breeds.

"Lavender, also known as “self-blue” are not like your typical blue chickens. Lavender Orpingtons will breed true and all of the offspring will be the Lavender color. ... The Lavender Orpington Chickens lay 175 - 200 lightly tinted eggs per year and are considered a sustainable heritage breed."

Sounds good to me, whenever they're ready! Putting doms in tomorrow :)

We have white orps and we really like them. They're big, calm, and friendly. The lavenders are so pretty! They match well with the doms, personality wise.

So Bay, when does butchering begin? How many hens are headed to the soup pot?

Tired. We decked our good neighbor's porch. I went up on the roof, DH and Robert pushed the plywood up to me, helped position it and I screwed it down. He didn't have any tar paper, we did, and we had a half a box of tar paper nails with the plastic rounds on them. The guys went to go get them, I relaxed on the roof until they got back. They rolled out the tar paper on the ground, rolled it up and put it on the roof. I rolled it out and tacked it down. We got home at 1:30, took showers. I ate a piece of sausage and a hunk of cheese. Then I cut up the 10 chickens, pot of boneless meat is in the refrigerator, bones are still in the ice chest. I finished that at 4:30, then started supper.

Tomorrow is busy all day, Wednesday morning we take the hogs to slaughter, THEN I can come home and can all that chicken and make/can broth!

You deserve a break today!
Not gonna get it. Our black Lab/Great Dane is sick. We noticed yesterday at 3:30 when he refused cooked chicken. He was severely dehydrated and weak. Called the vet, he was fixing to leave on a farm call so we have a 8:00 appointment. I gave Parker a sugar/salt water solution a little at a time, gave him cold clean water and he drank a little. He tried to wag his tail, but couldn't lift it. By 10:30 last night he could wag his tail, his skin was passing the pinch test and he went outside to pee. Good. Kidneys working. This morning he went out to pee and came right back in. Still weak. We are very concerned and worried about him.

Then I have a big pot of broth to can.

Yesterdays work.

Just sat down. Turned off the pressure canner, got 16 pint jars of rich yellow broth.

The vet is keeping Parker overnight, put an IV on him, took xrays, found nothing conclusive. His blood work was good, he had a light fever. There was a big "something" that shielded getting a good look at his intestines. At 111 pounds, it is likely fat. I keep telling DH to stop treating Parker like a garbage can, but he is hard to resist. LOL The vet is going to check him for intestinal blockage with barium and will call us later this evening with an update. Last year when he swallowed a hickory nut and it blocked his intestines, it showed up on xray and was easy to see. This time, who knows.
