You guys crack me up!

So anyway, back to paleo. I know some people who have taken paleo to the extreme and have gone total carnivore. They are doing quite well. I tried it for a month just to see what it was like and I have trouble getting enough fat in my diet without dairy. The meats available in the stores are too lean.

If I had access to grass-fed meat and can get organ meats as well as the fat from the animal, it would have been a different story.

Everything I have found on diets like this shows them to be perfectly healthy (well, with grass-fed meat). The only nutrient humans can't get from quality natural meat is vitamin C, but there are 2 vitamin C precursors. It also appears that the body's need for vitamin C is greatly reduced when you don't have grains, sugars and starches in your diet.

This is where the research of Vilhjalmur Stefansson comes in handy. When he and another explorer did their Bellevue hospital study on a meat only diet, it was predicted they would get scurvy within a month. After 1 year, neither of them got scurvy despite not eating and fruits or vegetables.

It's off the paleo topic a little bit, but we started our new lifestyle on Saturday. No wheat, beans, or legumes. But I feel that dairy is a very important part of our diet, so full fat dairy in there too.

I have to say it was a great feeling after dinner on Saturday night to be full, but not uncomfortable. My head did not feel cloudy, I did not feel bloated like I normally would have after a meal. This is the way to live!!

I make a smoothie and a couple of eggs every morning, then we have several veggies and fruits for snacks throughout the day, lunches have just been leftovers from the dinner before and then a healthy dinner with meat and veggies.

Hubby feels great, he is seeing effects right away. I'm feeling them, so I won't give up.

It was funny, I made meatballs with marinara, and used spagetti squash in lieu of spagetti. Hubby loved it, he never tried it when I made it before the change.

We've also started exercising most days. I feel a great change coming on!!

Thanks for the support y'all!

The Paleo Diet is a way of eating in the modern age that best mimics diets of our hunter-gatherer ancestors - combinations of lean meats, seafood, vegetables, fruits, and nuts.

____
few things, we sure can't mimic non-chemical hard life of the old ancestors in the dino age now can we.....lol

and no T-Rex t-bones for any of us..lol

paleo is hunter/gatherer
it is the same as Zone, WW to a degree or any other just eat natural food, raw foods, etc. etc. etc. every diet as a form of natural in it.....I guess it is just a tad of eat this or don't eat that in the end.

The BILLIONS of dollars in diet info. is astounding. I think I might make a $million on a published diet I create and give it a fancy name. Tis the rage now and will always be.

I'm bringing this thread back to life due to the fact that my daughter may have to follow this lifestyle. She may have difficulties with all grains/gluten, legumes and possibly dairy as I've mentioned in another recent thread. This was recommended by her clinical dietitian due to the fact that she is suffering from internal inflamation.

I've done some research and even bought a recipe e-book called Paleo Recipe Book.

The recipes and food list seem to go along the lines of the nutrition class that free taught some of us. Healthy fats and oils, pastured meats and eggs etc. With the exception of properly prepared grains, legumes and raw dairy. The book even has some fermented food recipes.

Now that I know more about this way of eating, I'm not as afraid to take away dairy if I have to.

Here is a handy list of popular or widely available Paleo foods.

Meat
Beef, pork, lamb, veal, rabbit, goat, sheep, horse,
bison, wild boar.

Game meat
Deer, pheasant, bear, moose, woodcock, elk, duck,
rabbit, reindeer, wild turkey.

Poultry
Chicken, turkey, duck, quail, goose.

Fish
Salmon, tuna, trout, bass, halibut, sole, haddock,
turbot, walleye, tilapia, cod, flatfish, grouper, mackerel,
anchovy, herring.

Shellfish
Crab, lobster, shrimps, scallops, clams, oysters, mussels.

Fats
Avocados, avocado oil, olive oil, coconut oil, butter,
clarified butter (ghee), lard, tallow, duck fat, veal fat,
lamb fat, fatty fishes (sardines, mackerel, salmon),
nut butters, nut oils (walnut, macadamia), coconut
flesh, coconut milk.

Eggs
Chicken eggs, duck eggs, goose eggs, quail eggs.

Vegetables
Celery, tomatoes, bell peppers, onions, leeks, kohlrabi,
green onions, eggplants, cauliflower, broccoli,
asparagus, cucumber, cabbage, Brussels sprouts,
artichokes, okra, avocados.

Green leafy vegetables
Lettuce, spinach, collard greens, kale, beet top,
mustard greens, dandelion, swiss chard, watercress,
turnip greens, seaweeds, endive, arugula (rocket),
bok choy, rapini, chicory, radicchio.

Root vegetables
Carrots, beets, turnips, parsnips, rutabaga, sweet
potatoes, radish, jerusalem artichokes, yams, cassava.
Winter squash
Butternut squash, spaghetti squash, acorn squash,
pumpkin, buttercup squash.
Summer squash
Zucchini, yellow summer squash, yellow crookneck
squash.

Fruits
Bananas, apples, oranges, berries (strawberry, cranberry,
cranberry, blueberry, blackberry), grapefruit,
pears, peaches, nectarines, plums, pomegranates,
pineapple, papaya, grapes, cantaloupe, cherries,
apricot, water mellon, honeydew mellon, kiwi,
lemon, lime, lychee, mango, tangerine, coconut,
figs, dates, passion fruit, persimmon.

Nuts and seeds
Pistachios, Brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, sesame
seeds, pumpkin seeds (pepitas), pecans, walnuts,
pine nuts, macadamia nuts, chestnuts, cashews,
almonds, hazelnuts.

Mushrooms
Button mushroom, portabello, oyster mushroom,
shiitake, chanterelle, crimini, porcini, morel.
Fresh and dried herbs
Parsley, thyme, lavender, mint, basil, rosemary,
chives, tarragon, oregano, sage, dill, bay leaves,
coriander.

Spices
Ginger, garlic, black pepper, hot peppers, star
anise, fennel seeds, mustard seeds, cayenne pepper,
cumin, turmeric, cinnamon, nutmeg, paprika,
vanilla, cloves, chilies.
Sam's dietitian did say to limit nuts and that soaking (in whey and water) them was a good idea. She said that macadamia nuts are the best b/c they have more omega 3s than omega 6s.

ETA: She also said that sea salt or other mineralized salts were fine.

Oh, and under "meat" where it says "horse" just ignore please if it offends you. This book was written by a European. :p

I am surprised it lists butter. If I had affordable access to shellfish and butter, I would be good :D

I think many Paleo followers are no understanding that they need the fat.
I know of one notable that drinks raw dairy unashamedly.

From what I've read, dairy is hard for some to digest. If you make ghee aka clarified butter, you remove milk solids.
Clarified butter and butter
Butter is wonderful on anything and adds a great
nutty taste to dishes. Even though its not Paleo
since our ancestors didnt consume dairy products,
when you remove the milk constituents (the lactose
and the casein are the main problem causing constituents),
you get a fat that is highly saturated, delicious
and a good source of conjugated linoleic acid,
vitamin K2 and butyric acid when it comes from a
grass-fed animal.

For people who are sensitive to dairy or who just
want to be on the safe side, choose clarified butter
over regular butter. Clarified butter, also called Ghee,
is the pure butter fat without any of the milk solids
and is very healthy.
