I just wondered if anyone knew how one could find the age of an old canning jar. I've been looking at a few websites, but haven't found anything very helpful yet. I noticed a lot of similar type jars for sale on e-bay but none of the sellers seems to know the date of manufacture.
Do any of you do this regularly?
I usually adjust my canning recipes to whatever volume of food I have on hand, but I always thought you weren't supposed to do that, because dividing recipes in half or less can skew your recipe just a little (when dealing in smaller volumes you need to...
I'm looking for some guidelines. I saw the following comment from Tortoise in another thread, but would like more specifics (paging Tortoise):
I'm thinking I might keep the puppy on kibble as part of it's long term diet, but would like to feed maybe one meal per day of raw. What is the...
You realize that you can fit a pint canning jar in your automobile's cup holder. :P
That was me this morning.
I thought you all might enjoy adding one or two of your own amusing SS moments here . . . (this hasn't already been done before has it? I tried to search for a similar thread, but I...
Anyone have any tricks above and beyond slings? How do you get a garden put in the ground when you have a high energy infant who won't take regular or long naps? :barnie
I'm stressed out already just thinking about it.
Oh, yeah, I've been missing from the forum for a few months because I had...
It is my understanding that one should avoid powdered milk because the commercial dehydration process oxidizes the cholesterol in the milk, yes?
Is there similar concern with dehydrated meat products? Is there less concern because the end product is bulkier (not powdered) therefore not all the...
Please tell me this doesn't just happen to me:
If you have prolific egg production, you will have few customers.
If you reduce production for the rest of the season to better fit demand, demand will jump!
:th
Unfortunately, I really hate waste, so I tend to err on the side of reducing...
I've been running along with about a 98% full pm in-box off and on for some time now. I just noticed it was 48% full. Did we just get a boost in storage capabilities? If so . . . :woot
I was wondering about the safety of some mango chutney that I canned, back when I first started canning, about 6 years ago. I know that they say the food inside isn't as fresh after it has been canned for a year, but I wasn't sure how long it would be safe for. In trying to find an answer I...
Alright, I'm tired of store-bought flavors of ice cream. Seems like the only options are chocolate, coffee, mint chip, vanilla or strawberry. Not that I don't like chocolate, coffee, and mint chip ice cream, but I would just like a little more variety. Oh, and then there are Ben and Jerry...
Hey everyone, I'm wondering if we should formalize a seed saving group here on the SS forum for heirloom and open-pollinated seeds?
It is always good practice to save more seeds than you will plant in any given year, as crop failures happen, but wouldn't it be great if we had back-up? So if...
Well, I've got a wonderful unexpected medical bill which amounts to just over my month's allowance for food. And while it wouldn't kill me to take the money out of savings, I would rather not. So . . . I'm thinking about going a month without buying any food instead. Unfortunately, I will...
From time to time, I hear people mention the ads they see when they are reading on the forum. I just thought you all should know that I just saw an ad for a sandwich spread called Baconnaise. :lau
Hey, I thought some of you might enjoy this book -- Microlivestock -- I stumbled on. It looks like the whole book is available to read on-line. :thumbsup
Well, I'm sure some of you bright people already know this, but I didn't until today . . . .
I buy regular brocolli, not organic, most of the time because it is supposed to be a crop that isn't sprayed as much with pesticides. But I did a double take when I saw the box the brocolli came out...
Alright . . . we have a few too many roos and they need to go! I have never dispatched or butchered anything and I will probably try to find someone to teach me the proper technique, but I can't keep these roos around much longer.
I know that I could rent killing cones, a plucker, and a...
OK, I'm jumping the gun a little bit (it isn't quite the stereotypical time of year when we make goals for the upcoming year), but I thought maybe it would be fun to list projects that we all might want to do in the future, as time and resources allow. Some days my immediate goals seem...
So a few years ago, well . . . come to think of it probably about five years ago now . . . I started typing out my favorite recipes and printing them out and putting them into a 3 ring binder. That way, if I want to make a recipe, I can take it out of the binder and post it on my fridge with...
