What SS Mistakes Have You Made?

What mistakes have you made on your journey to self sufficiency or sustainability? I think the mistakes are as important as the successes to some degree, so that others can learn by them, so we don't repeat them. My big one is too long of a driveway. It was impossible to shovel due to the...

    Alarm Lamp That Mimicks Sunrise

I'd love to have one of these to wake up more naturally without the jarring alarm at 5am. http://www.sunriseclockalarm.com/ Those are pricey, so is there a way to make one? I am limited in my understanding of how this would work. All I could come up with is to have a bunch of light bulbs in...

    Former Freeway Turned into Farm

Hayes Valley turns a former freeway into a farm after the 1989 earthquake left them structurally unsound. Testing for lead levels and extensive over layering of organic matter have transformed and given new life to this community...

What do Turnip Greens Taste Like?

I dislike turnips but thought I might try growing the Seven Top Turnip greens this year. I hate beets, yet love beet greens so I wonder if I may have a similar experience with turnip greens. Could someone describe what turnip greens taste like? Are there recipes for using them beyond just...

    Soy products in tea?

I was looking at tea labels at my local big name grocery. I love anything containing Lemon Verbena so naturally I read labels to find it. Lemon Lift by Bigelow seemed lemony so I was totally unprepared to read that it lists its natural lemon flavors from soy lecithin, period. I know many...

5 gallon bucket handles need fixin

I have a bunch of 5 gallon buckets that need something! The plastic hand grips have broken off from the wire handles. I put split firewood in the buckets and bring in about 4 for each night. Even with gloves the bare wire handles are uncomfortable. Any ideas?

    Meat Glue. . . Mmmm!

Nothing says "you care" like meat glue. http://www.icenews.is/index.php/2010/02/22/sweden-finds-meat-glue-unsavoury/ .. parts fused to produce what appears to be a whole fillet.. it looks like real meat. It is the dishonesty in it that makes us think that it is not okay...

Would you go back to this vet?

I took my Golden Retriever in for her annual a few months ago a bit early because I needed confirmation on her false pregnancy. She has a history of them. Lexie's sire is a Canadian grand champion, dam from England and I have every intention of breeding her once, keeping 2 pups. The false...

    Bad news about supplements

    Homemade Tiki Torches

I ran across an article that I cut out many years ago. In 1993 after having a pond dug, I built a Tiki Juice bar by the pond. It was built from maple saplings from my woods, had a reed grass roof from the swampy area, counter and stools. I bought tiki torches that needed refilling frequently...

How does Rabies factor into SS?

http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/01/29/central.park.rabies/index.html?hpt=Sbin If TSHTF I could easily see NYC residents hitting that park for meals, eating anything that moves, which will now include animals carrying Rabies. I live in a rural area that got hit hard by Rabies a few...

What discontinued foods do you miss?

So, have they discontinued foods that you loved? Someone has a thread about split pea soup that got me thinking. My brothers, sister and I were reminiscing about a powdered sour cream packet that our mother used instead of real sour cream. I'm sure it was nothing but powdered milk and...

    Organic Cotton Fraud

Retailers caught selling certified organic cotton products contaminated with genetically modified cotton from India. India supplies 50% of global organic cotton. Blame goes to inadequate monitoring. They get top $$$ for certified organic products and the consumer gets bilked. My preference is...

    Voicepipes and Speaking Tubes

I would love to install some voicepipes aka speaking tubes for fun. I know they were used on ships, maybe still are. I'd even put one at the front door and run it to my desk. Out to the coop instead of using the baby monitor? That would save a small amount of electricity and every little bit...
