Random questions about a little bit of everything SS

Yes, I'm not talking about TSHTF on a global, or even nation scale. Its more like "Oh, we lost power and won't get it back for a few days, oh well, still have food/water for everyone" January of 2012 we didn't have power for almost 2 weeks. 75% of the town didn't. We also had about a foot and...

I wouldn't be looking to take from it unless the SHTF. I'd like to know that there would be plenty of water for everyone :) I will be sure to watch for properties listed like that, thank you for the warning! :)

FutureFarmGuy: Thanks for the link! I would have never thought of getting the soil tested :) BarredBuff: The reason I chose goats is for meat as well as milk. I don't drink milk, but would use it to make soaps and feed as a supplement to the other animals. I'm not just raising meat for me, but...

Random questions about a little bit of everything SS

Ok. So I am a first time home buyer. Sometime in the not so distance future (5 years?) I would like to buy a house, with the goal of being as self sufficient as possible while spending as little money up front as possible. Here is what I plan on having (eventually): - 40'x40' minimum garden -...

    Herbal Studies

I've been considering taking 2 of Penn-fosters courses, do you think that they are worth it? I'm looking into both the homeopathy certificate and the herbal studies certificate to go along with my vet tech degree.

What did you do to save $ today?

I just don't shampoo. For a while I was using baking soda to wash and 1tbls acv in water to condition. Works pretty well but than I started reading about people who gave up on soap completely and thought I'd give it a try. Like this guy here I also don't use deodorant, but baking soda or...

What did you do to save $ today?

Today I picked up 25+ pounds of free freezerburned meat to be used as dog food, and scheduled a pickup for about 150ish pounds of scrap (some meat, fat, bone, organ, heads etc) from a local farmer for the same purpose. BUT, my greatest accomplishment in saving $ is almost 2 weeks ago I went...

    Starting over!

Sorry it been so long since an update, things have been pretty crazy around here lately. First, a couple weekends ago I misread the schedule at work, thinking I had a day off when I didn't so I made plans to be out of town that day. Went in to work the next day and they fired me for a...

    Starting over!

DenimDeb- The temp job I had running the breeding facility was a live on site position, but I have two big dogs and a cat, and not many people will take that many animals, if any. hgueen- I'm a carb addict, so it will be difficult to begin with, but totally worth it! :) SSDreamin - How do you...

    Starting over!

I've actually been looking into a primal or paleo diet, but hadn't seen that link! Thanks :) I'm thinking of going paleo until I actually get my own goats for milk and things, then switching more to primal :)

    Starting over!

Sort of. I have worked at various horse farms cleaning stalls/training/feeding and even had a temporary job managing a horse breeding operation. But it seems like I spend more money getting to and from every farm job I've looked into then what I would be making.

    Starting over!

Yea I think from what I've read that they are pretty inaccurate, but it probably won't hurt to lose a few pounds either :) Since I'm planning on living in a tent (hopefully one like this this if I can get one on sale) with no electricity for a bit I started to compile a list of things I...

Help needed to rid a house of cat hair and cigarette smoke!!

After pulling the carpet/pad I would spray the floor with vinegar pretty liberally and allow to dry really well at least once before laying any new flooring down. That will help to get rid of any odors that might be of issue :)
