    Hydrofracturing

We're in the Allegheny Mountains of MD. The first driller we talked to recommended hydrofracturing first. He says if it doesn't work, he'll discount the cost of drilling a new well. Rumor has it, that the new house across the street went 700' deep :(

    Hydrofracturing

Our well is about 25 years old. When is was drilled, it was 298 feet deep with a yield of 3 GPM. It has slowly declined so I no longer do laundry at home. We installed a storage tank to help spread the damand on the water through out the day, but the well still periodically runs out and the...

Personally, I would get a male and a female. I've had more problems with males getting territorial and fighting :(

    Homemade chicken noodle soup...

I usually add a dollop of acid (lemon juice or vinegar) when boiliing the legs to help draw out the nutrients. Add desired veggies and seasonings -- and serve with fresh bread!

    Hydrofracturing

Has anyone ever had their well hydrofractured? How did it work out for you? We're trying to decide on that or a new well :( Inchworm

    hard boiled eggs

I finally had my first decent batch of hard-bolied fresh eggs. I boiled them, cooled them in cold water, and then but them back in the hot water and boiled them again for 5 more minutes, and then back in the cold water.

    beef broth

Ok. I browned the "meaty" bones, but most of the bones were not. Next time I'll brown all the bones. Thanks! Inchy

    beef broth

I make my own chicken broth all the time, so when we split a side of beef with someone, I assumed I would make beef broth out of the bones. I followed the direction in Nourishing Traditions and I'm underwhelmed with the result (granted - I didn't toss in the optional hoof). The final result is...

    Removing snow from roof

It's not a gambrel, just a simple gable. I was guessing it was 3/12, but 4/12 could be right. The house was built to code in 1985. We're just wondering how good code is when you're in the midst of getting more snow in one week than has ever been recorded before. Not to mention we had the...

    Removing snow from roof

I took this photo this morning while shoveling my way to the heatpump to shovel it out. The house is built into the side of a hill, so this back area is ground level. At the front of the house, it is two stories high. At the far left is the sunroom with the flat roof. In the back, you can...

    Removing snow from roof

I figure there are plenty of people here with much more experience with snow than I have... SO - - when do you remove snow from your roof? DH has been at it all day. I'm wondering about the wisdom of this. We had 29" of snow 3 days ago. We are supposed to get another 15" tonight and...

Why do you love being married.

At this point in my life, I think I would be happy single or married, though I think I would be a different person either way with different priorities. I happen to be married to the only person who can consistently make me have a deep-belly laugh with tears of laughter running down my cheeks...

Random Question. Will a cat control rats?

I have 4 barn cats - 3 boys and 1 girl. One of the boys is a rescue cat who is just worthless at hunting. The three kittens are siblings we found on the property. Of them all, one of the boy kittens is a superior killer. His brother and siter are tied for second place. Our superior killer...

Winter Storm Thread....how deep is your snow?

The snow seems to be tapering off. We only have a few farmers on this road, but they are already out with their tractors doing what they can to make our road passable. Gotta luv em'!

Winter Storm Thread....how deep is your snow?

Bee - I was wondering how you were getting by when I woke up this morning. Glad your power is back on. We have about 36" right now (about an hour west of Baltimore and DC). The power here only flicked off for a second. Dear hubby shoveled a path up to the coop and shoveled out the heat pump...

Ok - everybody liked the pasties! I can see it as a great way to use up all kinds of leftovers. And they don't get mushy like my pot pies.
