    Franchises?

So I've determined that probably the only way I'm going to get away from the job I detest is to start my own business? I would love to do the direct-to-consumer farm stuff, but I'm not convinced that's the way I need to go. The other thing I've been considering is opening a franchise...

Storing small appliances in an unheated area

Now that we have wayyyy downsized, I have several small appliances that I'm going to need to store in our unheated garage for the winter. One of them is my dehydrator, and another is my pressure canner (maybe not technically an 'appliance'). Will the cold have a negative effect on them? I...

    Soaking newly butchered chickens

I know I should leave my chickens to soak in water for at least 24 hours, but there is absolutely not enough room in our fridge for 6 birds. What about keeping them in a cooler full of ice water? Is that safe enough?

    Rash on my ring finger

When I get water underneath my engagement ring, I end up with this nasty rash which is a whole bunch of little, kind of itchy bumps. I try to be very careful to take my ring off when I wash my hands, but when I don't, it pops up. Anyone know what it is, and what I can do to fix it? Neosporin...

    Fencing for a goat

We are possibly getting a 7 mo old Boer goat, which we would like to use to browse on the number of brushy areas around our farm. First of all, is this a reasonable expectation for a goat? Also, what kind of fencing would you use for this? I've heard goats are pretty clever, and can figure...

    Dark brown beeswax

DH has been getting me wax from his hives, but this stuff is really dark and kinda sticky. It kind of seems like there would be honey in it, but it's not separating out like it does with the first-round wax. It works for candles and the hand cream I make, but the color is unappealing for items...

    An odd question

Really, how germy is a toilet? OK, I'm not saying I'd be eating lunch in there or anything, but commercials for bathroom cleaners make it seem like a toilet is a nuclear waste dump. I understand that a very effective way to sell a product is through fear, but are any of you guys worried that...

Berkey water filter - as good as they claim?

DH & I have been talking about buying a Berkey. Does anyone have any feed back on whether or not they actually work as well as they claim? Also, if you like them, what size do you recommend?

    Cleaning a metal strainer

I love my metal strainer for straining out juices & such when I'm processing fruits & veggies. But it drives me CRAZY to clean it! I never let it sit, so I'm trying to clean it while it's 'fresh', but I feel like it's impossible to get all the bits out of the metal. Any one have any tips for me?

    peach juice?

Dear DEAR DH came home with 5 baskets full of peaches from our local orchard. They are culls, so they aren't the best quality, and some of them are really too soft to freeze IMO. I'm thinking of running them thru the food mill, and will probably make some more jam out of them, but the 2 of us...

Wifezilla & other duck people - ? about Indian runner ducks

Are they pretty self-sufficient? We have a pond and are looking for some ducks that will keep the duckweed down. Someone is offering Indian runner ducks for free on Craigslist. I have heard that there are some ducks who will nest in trees, so you don't need to build them a house.

    Need a hangover cure

I'm usually very smart when I drink, and keep to my 2 drink maximum. Well, last night I wasn't so smart. I'm drinking lots of water, which helps. Do you guys have any tips on other ways to speed up my recovery?

    homemade popsicles

I have been eating lots of popsicles lately, so as a way to save money, I bought a pack of popsicles molds. Bought some add-your-own sugar koolaid so that I could cut down on the sugar in them. But they just don't seem to have as much flavor as the store-bought ones. Do you guys have any...

    Moldy homemade hand cream

I've been making homemade lotion for friends & family, and had one mention that hers got moldy. She has had it since the winter, and is the first one who's had that problem. My lotion is water, almond oil, Vitamin E oil, beeswax & essential oils for fragrance. Is there a natural preservative...

    Sore neck and shoulder mystery

Every month, I get pain in my neck and shoulder when I start my period. Unfortunately, it lasts for about 2 weeks and then I get 2 weeks respite before it comes back. It's definitely muscle pain, and it's driving me crazy! So it occurred to me that maybe it's a nutrient deficiency tied to my...

    Lip fold pyoderma in dogs

My dog has lip fold pyoderma. It's kind of a fungal infection where her tooth hits the fold in her lower lip. It bleeds and will get pus in it. Unfortunately, the vet said that the only way to fix it permanently is surgery! She did a round of antibiotics which cleared it right up, but it's...

Sore throat from sleeping near a fan?

Does anyone else ever have this problem? At night, I usually flip the fan around so it's pulling air out the window, away from me, but last night it was so hot, I left it blowing in. I woke up feeling like crap. :( Sore throat, really tired, etc. It just seems really unlikely that I picked...

    Tapioca flour substitute

I really want to bake something today, as it is pouring rain, and seems like a nice way to spend the day. This will be my first foray into baking since I ditched gluten. My local Kroger had xanthan gum, which I saw was in a lot of GF baked goods recipes, but no tapioca flour. Is there...
