Power Outages... How Do You Prepare?

Store as much water as possible, esp. for toilet flushing. We used those big 5 gallon water jugs. They hold plenty of water without being too heavy to lift. An attic is a great place to store the water. A natural gas stove for cooking. If it gets very cold, you can turn the oven on and it will...

    Wood furnaces?

We have a wood furnace in our basement and we have a gas furnace. The gas furnace gets very little use, because it costs about $300 a month to heat our house in the winter. The electricity to run the blower on the wood stove costs about $20 to $30 a month. The biggest pro of the indoor wood...

doing away with the big chain stores...

A few years ago I rarely set foot in a Wal Mart, but when food prices first started rising I had to start shopping there. The local grocery store (still 30 minutes away) raised their prices to a ridiculous level, and they never went back down. It costs about $30 more to shop there than at Wal...

Pass the butter please! interesting email about margarine

When I can churn my own margarine, then maybe I'll think about eating it. I get so aggravated when I see recipes in magazines calling for low-fat this, fat-free that, and margarine. :sick

Food Prices, Shortages & Inflation - The Trash Index

Around here I've noticed TP, coffee, and butter have all gone up in price. And that's just the stuff I noticed last time I went shopping several weeks ago. I'm going shopping again this weekend and I'm sure I'll find even more high prices that will just about make my eyes pop out.

How many chickens do you have? Or if your Wifezilla how many ducks?

I would like to get a few more chickens in the spring, my EE is now 3 years old and her laying is pretty sporadic. I won't get any more ducks though, 4 is plenty for me.

    Salt question!

I would try using a little less table salt. To me, table salt tastes much saltier (and more bland) than sea salt or kosher salt.

    Pizza toppings

I have to second Wifezilla, the alfredo sauce and chicken combo is a knockout. I've also done a Philly cheese steak pizza and a ranch chicken pizza - use ranch dressing as the sauce and top with chicken and onions, broccoli, etc.

    Ladies- question about BC

Oh, I feel your pain! Aunt Flo paid me a visit the morning of my sister's wedding years ago, I was a bridesmaid. So not fun. I'm going on a road trip very soon, and if my calculations are correct, Aunt Flo will pay me a visit on the drive home. Lovely!

Ducks - are they worth it?

A lot of people on BYC would disagree, but I find that keeping ducks is a lot less work than chickens. Here's a few things I've learned: - Give them a huge run. The more room they have, the better, because they are so darn messy with their water. -You'll get more eggs than you know what to...

    Building your own house

I agree, have a friend or someone help you that does have construction experience. And do make sure everything is square...believe me, it's no fun trying to remodel something 20 years later when the original builder didn't care whether a wall was square or not. :barnie

    Ladies- question about BC

It differs from person to person. My cycle didn't go back to normal for 4 months or so. I suggest looking into charting your cycles - it's a great way to learn about your body and its natural rhythms, and is a reliable birth control method.

Whats your favorite type of hunting?

My favorite is ruffed grouse. I just like being out in the woods in the fall. The smell of dead rotting leaves and mud is the best.

    Wisconsin beer-cheese soup, drool...

As a Wisconsinite, it's practically sacrilege to say it, but Leinies....ew. I would have to second Spotted Cow. I'm not much of a beer drinker, but I've heard a lot of good things about New Glarus Brewery. My mother-in-laws favorite is Dancing Man.

You can burn olive oil too, but it's probably cheaper to go with veggie oil. http://www.lehmans.com/store/Lamps_Lights___Olive_Oil_Lamps___Cabin_Olive_Oil_Lamp___15978?Args=&customField1=W9

    SHTF - Information?

Pat - the things I listed before are only a sampling of what I have in my notebooks. (Insert evil laugh here.) I focus sometimes on simple things because the experiences and skills my husband and I would need we already use and have, for the most part. Simple cooking - a 2-inch thick binder...
