tommywalnuts-My Self Sufficient Journal: Rural, Urban, and back again

Hey SS'ers :) Well as I said almost a year ago, things were in the crapper. Our foster kids went back with thier mom after living with us for 5 years. Then my "wife" left...came home one day to an empty house and no note or anything. She said she was tired of being married. So I did some...

tommywalnuts-My Self Sufficient Journal: Rural, Urban, and back again

Hey all Well its been a year since I have posted, and what a year. Been down right crappy, and honestly, I haven't given a flip about self sufficiency or the earth...or much of anything else. However, I am (somewhat)back on track, just trying to rebuild my life a piece at a time. I missed...

building a barn--update, what do you think of this quote?

I don't know if Oklahoma prices are cheaper, but here, my company would do a 12x 24 foot gable barn(7 foot walls with an 11 foot peak) for around 3500-4000. Now, that is total purchase price...which, if I was just building for myself, would probably be 1/2-2/3 of that price. Thats using metal...

    emphysema

So my dad(late 60's) has smoked non filter Camels for the last 45 years or so, and has emphysema(go figure). Well, he is convinced that there is a herbal remedy that will ease the symptoms....so he can still smoke. Kind of infuriating, isn't it? But the old man is tough as nails, and stubborn...

Pics of greenhouse built for customer

Icu The customer wanted this to match her home in shape and color. She wanted a total gray roof in the beginning, with only 2 small windows. I talked her into the gray/clear alternation on the southward facing roof to get her the maximum sunlight while still keeping with her color scheme...

    egg cartons?

Well, its just the 4 reds doing the laying. I'm down to 3 black sex links(damn dogs) and they're young pullets, and probably won't begin to lay until September. So its just the 4 older girls, which is 2 eggs a day...but day after day, not just every now and then. As to feed, I throw out 4-5...

    egg cartons?

So I am trying to acquire some empty egg cartons. My 4 red sex links are producing almost 50 eggs a week(49 as of today). I have called every one I know and no one has any. I didn't want to buy any(I may have to though)...none of the grocery stores have any either. Any suggestions...

Where would I find reusable building supplys?

A lot of lumber yards sell cull wood, which is warped or broken, pretty cheap. Of course since it is culled, it may not be usable for your purposes. Some may also let you scrounge through the waste pile. I do this routinely where I work, often coming home with 2x4s, 2x6s, and 1x4s by taking...

So what do I do with the hide?

You can sew up smaller cuts...depending on how thick the wool is, and how finely you sew, they can be hidden. Look on taxidermy.net in the tanning section, there is a lot of valuable info there, and lots of folks with ready advice.

Wild weather in Southern OK tonight

Well no fatalities here in southern OK...there were 5 reported so far in central OK, in the Norman area. There was a lot more destruction there as well. I do hate the loss of life, property, and security that comes with natures wrath. But I do enjoy the raw display of energy and force...

Wild weather in Southern OK tonight

Benn a rough night around here. Multiple tornados, heavy hail, etc. Several homes have been demolished as well. Luckily, our major population center, Ardmore, was narrowly missed by 3 different twisters. John and I saw a rope like one come down, maybe 2 miles away. We could see a larger one...

Pics of greenhouse built for customer

LOL Believe it or not, we actually delivered the main structure, minus the roof...reason being I was afraid the plexiglass panels wouldn't survive highway winds. We slid it off the trailer, jockeyed it into place, and then roofed it. Whenever possible, I prefer to build in the shop, I have...
